Sawn Timber

It is used in a variety of construction and building applications, such as framing, flooring, cladding, furniture, and more. Sawn timber is available in a number of varieties, each having its own unique characteristics and attributes. It is a flexible and durable material noted for its natural beauty and strength, making it ideal for a wide range of applications.

Quality grades of sawn joinery timber
When selecting sawn timber for joinery and woodworking applications, quality is essential. Different grades of sawn timber are available, each with its own distinct traits and properties. You should be aware of the following quality grades of sawn joinery timber:
Unsorted Joinery (Premium Grade)
With the lower grades removed, this is the best joinery timber available. Unsorted joinery is commonly utilised for elements such as doors, windows, and stairs when design is critical.
Unsorted timber is also ideal for internal mouldings such as skirtings, architraves, and other applications that demand a high level of polish. Unsorted joinery features a low knot content, straight grain, and a smooth finish.
We use unsorted joinery as standard on the majority of orders, unless otherwise requested.
5th Grade (Standard Grade)
This is the next grade, a more multi-purpose grade, which has a huge variety of uses. 5th Grade is typically used for cladding, flooring, skirting, architraves, dado rail, and many others.
5th Grade joinery retains the clean finish of unsorted but has a little higher knot content.
6th Grade (Contract Grade)
The lowest grade contains more faults and larger knots. It is an ideal application for packing goods and disposable pallets.
The 6th Grade can also be applied to certain forms of cladding and furniture manufacturing, where faults improve the product's quality.
6th Grade joinery has a higher knot content than unsorted, and the grain is not always straight.
Centre Free Green Split Joinery
The term "Centre Free Green Split" refers to sawn timber that has been treated and is intended for outdoor or structural applications, such as garden structures, agricultural buildings, and fences, where its treated nature provides durability and protection against decay, insects, and weathering.
The term "Centre Free Green Split" joinery refers to products that are sawn from a bigger piece of wet, "green" timber after the centre part of the log, which is frequently associated with faults such as splitting or instability, has been removed.
These products are primarily used in construction, such as timber framing in buildings, log houses, etc.; landscaping and garden structures, ideal for projects like sheds, fences, gates, planters and decking; as well as agricultural, used for crop storage, farm buildings and other rural structures where durability and weather resistance are needed.
Whitewood / Redwood
Redwood predominates in Griggs Timber Company, with some bigger pieces being made of Whitewood.
This is appropriate for stair applications and other uses requiring wide timber.
